David Mitchell, a Calgary-based Fellow and former Governor of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, is now serving as president and board member of the Fragile X Research Foundation of Canada. Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition that causes intellectual disability, behavioural and learning challenges, and various physical characteristics. While little known, it is the most common inherited cause of autism and intellectual disabilities, with few effective treatments and no cure at this time. The Foundation facilitates community education, awareness and advocacy, as well as basic and clinical research into Fragile X and related conditions.
